Crowded Harbor

It gets a little crowded in the Vinalhaven Harbor with all of the comings and goings of the lobster boats. The light slowly awakens the harbor already busy with the fishmen and women loading their boats with bait and traps for a long summer days work.

Afloat

Afloat and standing at attention to welcome and bid farewell to all arriving and departing on the Vinalhaven Ferry. The baithouse stays afloat through fog, sun, wind and rain to greet all who come this way.

Over the Edge

Plein aire from my last day on Vinalhaven Island. I will miss the marking of time by the tides rolling in and out, the daylight that stretches from 4 am until 9:30 pm. I love these little bait houses that cling to the granite as the water flows in and out. Beautiful place.

Sunflower Time

It's hot in Texas and that means sunflower time. Sunflowers follow the sun with their faces from east to west each day and then nod their heads back to the east as the sun sets. They are the original solar panels. Thank goodness sunflowers are a commodity crop now. We all benefit from their happy faces.

Orange Cannas

Rogue orange cannas have found a hospitable spot at White Rock Lake. These, like so many other plants have escaped from the cultivated garden and naturalized to spread their beauty for everyone to enjoy. There are so many quiet places to appreciate if you take the time to leave the paved path and walk along the shoreline.

Overlooking the Sanctuary

A momentarily colorful, cool puddle  serves as a sanctuary to the birds passing through the soon parched landscape at the Hagerman Wildlife refuge. The greens and oranges soon give way to browns and golds until the winter flocks arrive to feast on the brown and blue Texas winter landscape.

White Rock Summer Bloom

A pretty little spot at White Rock Lake this week. It's hot and humid but these tall purple water plants love the heat and humidity. I happened upon this spot while walking around White Rock one hot and humid morning. Not a bad place to begin each day!

Spring is never complete for a Texan without the annual drive to find the best bluebonnet field in Texas. I found this field outside of Ennis on the Bluebonnet Trail. Fall rain has delivered beautiful displays of bluebonnets to satisfy the hearts of true Texans.
